"I'm sure they taste fine." The macarons are fine. To put it simply, Kate is a snob. She notices the imperfections because she, instead of striving for excellence, goes for perfection. She would have rather thrown the whole batch out instead of serving something that looked off-center. It is not an endearing quality.

Kate has a sudden flash back to when several people got in trouble for snooping where they ought not to snoop and causing trouble for the Magistrates. Is it going to be like that this time around? She doesn't know. Maybe the powers-that-be won't be such assholes. It could happen, strangers things already have.
